Welcome to Project 64!

The goal of Project 64 is to preserve Commodore 64 related documents
in electronic text format that might otherwise cease to exist with the
rapid advancement of computer technology and declining interest in 8-
bit computers on the part of the general population.

Extensive efforts were made to preserve the contents of the original
document. However, certain portions, such as diagrams, program
listings, and indexes may have been either altered or sacrificed due
to the limitations of plain vanilla text. Diagrams may have been
eliminated where ASCII-art was not feasible. Program listings may be
missing display codes where substitutions were not possible. Tables
of contents and indexes may have been changed from page number
references to section number references. Please accept our apologies
for these limitations, alterations, and possible omissions.

Document names are limited to the 8.3 file convention of DOS. The
first characters of the file name are an abbreviation of the original
document name. The version number of the etext follows next. After
that a letter may appear to indicate the particular source of the
document. Finally, the document is given a .TXT extension.

The author(s) of the original document and members of Project 64 make
no representations about the accuracy or suitability of this material
for any purpose. This etext is provided "as-is". Please refer to the
warantee of the original document, if any, that may included in this
etext. No other warantees, express or implied, are made to you as to
the etext or any medium it may be on. Neither the author(s) nor the
members of Project 64 will assume liability for damages either from
the direct or indirect use of this etext or from the distribution of
or modification to this etext.

[ 1.0 ] General Description

Trouble in Timberland!

Let us remind you. As Ranger of Poconose Park, you have a tremendous
responsibility. Clean up the litter. Keep your eye on the swimmers.
And, whip those wild forest creatures in line. Go to it!

[ 2.0 ] How to Play

Basics

How to Start

Press F1 to start a 1 Player game.
Press F3 to start a 2 Player game.
Press F5 to change the game options.

Customizer Option

Press F5 to display the menu screen. You can use this screen to
customize the difficulty of each level. Use the joystick to move the
flashing cursor next to the attribute you wish to change. Then, press
the joystick button to cycle through the options available for that
attribute.

To save the current setup, DO NOT use the Save Menu option on the
screen, as it is disabled. Instead, select Save Game from the File
menu. Similarly, to load a setup, select Open Game from the File menu.

Patrolling the Park

Move your on-screen ranger around by pushing the joystick left, right,
forwards or backwards. Press the joystick button to:

 1) Enter or exit your raft,
 2) Release snake repellent in the water, or
 3) Hop over objects on land.

To pick up trash, move over it. To rescue drowning swimmers, sail into
them.

Performance Chart

Use the chart at the bottom of the screen to monitor your work. It
shows how many pieces of litter remain, and tracks your energy level.
When you fall below 1000 CALS (calories), reenergize by walking into
the supply hut, or reclaiming stolen supplies from giant ants (see
Dangers). Also, a flashing "HELP!" means that a swimmer is in trouble.
Swimmers always swim near the supply hut.

Dangers in the Park

Beware of swamps! They'll swallow you up. If the terrain looks funny,
walk around that spot!

Sneaky snakes can deflate your boat. Force them to dive with your
snake repellent. But remember, each blast costs 200 energy cals.

Turtles are harmful on land, but once lured into the water, they can
be sailed over for points. Blue turtles cannot be lured into the water.

Giant ants will steal your food. Walk into them from the side or kick
them from behind to retrieve stolen supplies.

Logs should be steered around. But, if you're really adventurous, try
dancing on one for big points. Just hit the log head-on at top speed,
and stay on the moving log until the bar at the lower right of the
screen turns blue.

Swimmers can deflate your raft if touched when they're not in trouble.

If a swimmer drowns, you lose your current ranger.

Power Plant

Strange things live in the forest. Like the mysterious plant that
grows just to the left of the supply hut. Touch it and you'll hear a
ringing sound as it grows. When the plant is fully grown, eat from its
power fruit by pressing the joystick button and watch yourself take
off! You must pick up a drowning swimmer or a turtle in the water to
be able to make it grow again.

The game is over when you run out of lives or when the Ranger needs
energy and your supply hut is empty.

Keyboard

Function Key Description F1 One player F3 Two player F5 Display the
menu screen.

Joystick

Move your on-screen ranger around by pushing the joystick left, right,
forwards or backwards. Press the joystick button to:

 1) Enter or exit your raft,
 2) Release snake repellent in the water, or
 3) Hop over objects on land.

[ 3.0 ] Scoring

100 points for each piece of trash collected.

Bonus points for remaining energy and supply cals at the end of each
level.

A bonus Ranger is awarded every 20,000 points.

5000 points and 1000 supply cals are awarded for each rescued swimmer.

5000 points for successfully dancing on a log.

200 points for sailing over a turtle.

[ 4.0 ] Hints

Try not to get ahead of yourself once there are snakes in the water.
If you are traveling at full speed, you will not have enough time to
drop repellent before a snake punctures your raft if one should appear.

[ 5.0 ] Game History

Tony Ngo also worked for a company called Sirius Software, and wrote,
among others, a game called "Bandits" for the C64.
