Tips for The Great Escape, written from Zzap!64 issue 27

There are three keys around the camp which are used to gain access to the more inaccessible parts of the castle. The first key is easily found in the room next to the cells, and using it gives to rooms containing a German uniform. This is very useful because if you wear it, you can explore the out of bounds rooms with a reasonable degree ofsafety. Ordinary soldiers don't cart youoff to solitary if you're discovered, but beware of the Commandant - he spots you straight away. Still on the subject of the uniform: it's advisable not to be wearing the uniform when you escape or you are shot as a spy!

The torch is needed to explore the underground tunnel. The tunnel is also a good place to hide your stolen objects, otherwise under the stove in your hut, or the red cross room are a pretty safe bet.

The wire cutters are the most useful object in the whole game, and without them there is no escape. The bar of chocolate acts as a great distraction - just give it (don't drop it) to a fellowprisoner and he attracts the guards' attention so that you can negotiate the fence. The compassis absolutely essential in order to escape and it's fairly self explanatory what you do withit!

The Red Cross parcels are a bit of a nuisance, as you only get one a day. However, there is a way around this. Get the first parcel that arrives and hide it somewhere safe. Deliberately get caught doing something bad and be thrownin solitary for the night. When you're released the next morning another parcel arrives... Keep doing on this until you have all four. The shovel is another essential object - with it you can dig your way through the blockage in one of the tunnels.

Here's a curious little tip from Zzap!64issue 41:

(Use the accompanying map)
Find key number one, stand in front of the door, it opens and push the joystickto the left while keeping the fire button held down. The result? Your morale shoots up to 100 and your score will likewise increase for as long as you can keep your hands in that position.

--------------------------------------
use the accompanying map (scroll with crsr, clr+home, shift+clr/home)
Get key one, open the relevant door and get the guard's uniform. Wear the uniform on your way out, and leave the key where you found it. Get the Red Cross parcel, open it and get the money bag. Put the money somewhere safe (usually the tunnel).

Get key two and use it to open the relevant door. Put the key in a safe place, get the tool kit and unlock the door to the room housing the spade. Takethe tool kit back to the safe place, getthe spade and take it back to the safe place, then leave the uniform. Get the tool kit and the ID papers.

Leave the tool kit and get the torch. Head back to the tunnel and remove the blockage using the spade. Put the spade down and go back to get the ID papers. Use the tunnel again, only this time leave the ID papers at the end of the tunnel near the exercise yard. Follow normal routine in day two but get the Red Cross parcel - it contains the wire-cutters which are essential for your escape.

Follow normal routine on day three, but get the Red Cross parcl. On day four getthe Red Cross parcel (for the compass) and you are now ready to escape. Use themain tunnel and take the compass to the exercise yard. Get the wire-cutters and cut through the wire. Drop the compass. Cut the wire and get the ID papers, thencut the wire again to get out. Drop the wire-cutters, pick up the compass, and run off the screen to escape to safety. Go for it - and do Steve McQueen proud!
